Day Camp 2026 CIT Program - (Counselor In Training)

At this time, there is no registration discount available for MRUSD students, unlike in previous summers. Due to uncertainty regarding federal funding, MRUSD has not yet received confirmation of the allocation for summer programming and may not receive this information until shortly before the start of camp. Families will be notified if funding becomes available.

What is a CIT?

CIT stands for "Counselor In Training." This program is designed to provide young people (ages 13-15) with leadership and development opportunities through hands on learning experiences. The CIT program is perfect for teens who have aged out of Day Camp, but still want to be immersed in "camp life" and ready to take on an added level of responsibility.

CITs will help out with a variety of camp tasks from camper supervision to assisting with activity planning and implementation, to helping clean up! Not only are CITs a great helping hand, but they also become great role models for the kiddos at our camp. By the end of Summer, many campers look up to these teens and tell us they can't wait until they are old enough to be a CIT - and that is what this program is all about!

How do I know if my child is a good fit for the program?
Being a CIT is not for everyone, and that's okay! A strong candidate for our CIT program is typically a young teen who is eager to grow as a leader and contribute positively to a camp community. While they may not yet have formal experience leading young campers, they will show enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to learn. These teens often enjoy being part of group activities, like to help others and take pride in being role models, even if they are still figuring out what leadership means for them.

An important trait of a Counselor in Training is responsibility. A good CIT shows they can follow guidelines, manage their time and stay committed to tasks (even when theyre not the most exciting). They demonstrate growing maturity in the way they communicate, handle feedback, and navigate challenges. Though mistakes are expected, strong CIT candidates are open to learning from them and motivated to improve.

ALL CITS must have an interest and basic understanding of working with children and how to be a good role model. They will listen well, show empathy toward younger campers, and recognize the value of working together with the counselor team. They don't need to be outgoing or naturally confident - our program is designed to build those skills - but they should be willing to step out of their comfort zone and try new things.

Registration Information
Registration is done by the WEEK (Monday-Thursday). You can sign up for 1 week or all of the weeks, that is up to you and your family! We do NOT allow single-day registrations

After registering, all CIT candidates must contact Chloe to schedule an interview. While it’s not a formal interview, it’s a great opportunity for the CIT to meet with us before summer begins. We’ll talk about the program, answer questions, put a familiar face to a name, and make sure the CIT feels confident that this is the right fit for them. CITs can schedule their interview by emailing c.lumbra@stalbansvt.com

Prior to the start of camp, there will be an orientation/training for all registered CITs to attend. At the orientation, they will get the chance to meet the other CITs, become familiar with Hard'ack, and learn more in-depth about their roles and responsibilities at camp.
