Wilderness First Aid – 16 hours

Accidents happen! This is the perfect course for people who play or work in the outdoors to gain a basic level of emergency care training. Designed for the backcountry, the knowledge and skills can be applied anywhere using a simple first aid kit and improvisation.  The course covers the following topics in a combination of talks, discussions, skills demonstration, and scenarios:
  • Prevention of Emergencies.
  • Initial Assessment and Response to Life-threatening Emergencies.
  • Patient Assessment
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Musculoskeletal Injuries
  • Environmental Emergencies
  • Medical Emergencies
Successful completion of the course awards the participant with Wilderness First Aid Certification from Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO), a leader in the area of wilderness medicine education.

Instructor:
Patrick Malone – is a full time faculty member at the University of Vermont and an adjunct instructor for SOLO.  Involved in emergency services education for nearly forty years, he has been teaching a variety of wilderness medicine courses since 1996 to UVM students, the Vermont Game Warden Service and members of other outdoor & emergency service organizations.  A lifetime outdoorsman, most of is current outdoor adventures involve his grandchildren.
