The St. Albans City Recreation Department offers group lessons year-round. Swimming can and should be a fun activity, and it requires specific skills. We teach lessons using an American Red Cross curriculum. Our instructor team has decades of teaching experience and we are very excited to welcome you to Hard'ack Pool for the upcoming season of lessons! Classes are conducted at our beautiful facility located at 179 Congress Street in St. Albans. We do our best to offer lessons on days and times that fit most families' schedules. And we maintain a low teacher to student ratio so that young swimmers can learn skills properly and quickly.

Registration Information:
  • All classes are processed on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Classes with fewer than 3 participants may be cancelled. Participants will be notified of changes in advance.
  • Classes are not cancelled or rescheduled for rain or cold, however if there is an electrical storm in the area, we'll conduct dry-land activities focusing on swim skills and water safety.
  • Once registered, there is no refund. When possible, we will gladly switch participants to other class times.

What to expect on lesson day:
  • If you've received a Red Cross swim lesson booklet please bring it to your first class so we can track your progress.
  • Please arrive on the pool deck in a swim suit and towel ten minutes prior to the lesson start time. The instructor will call you to the water's edge.
  • Bathing suits are required. No other clothing is allowed in the pool.
  • Children who are not toilet trained must wear "swim diapers" in the water. Swim Diapers are available for sale at the counter.
  • Parents or family members may watch lessons from the bleachers. Only instructors and students are permitted on the pool deck.
  • Snorkels, masks, fins, flotation devices etc. are not permitted during swim lessons.

Additional Information
  • For swimmers with a disability or health condition, please fill complete the questionnaire and email to r.centeno@stalbansvt.com at the time of registration. Document is attached at the bottom.

Swim classes provide experiences and activities for learners to learn to ask for permission before entering the water; to learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner; to feel comfortable in the water; to explore submerging to the mouth, nose and eyes and fully submerging; to explore buoyancy on the front and back position; to change body position in the water; to learn how to play safely; to experience wearing a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket; plus age-appropriate water safety topics. There is not a pass/fail component to these classes. Very often families take the class several times throughout the summer for a fun consistent way to be in the water.
