Join us for a fantastic new offering with different courses planned throughout the changing seasons. Paul Brown will lead groups around outdoor areas like St. Albans Town forest and Hard'ack to discover that there is way more than meets the eye, when you're outdoors.
Snow Science & Winter Ecology (Winter)
Rescheduled - February 6th @ Hard'ack Recreation Area

This is an almost entirely “hands-on “and outdoor workshop to learn about the science and phenomena of cold, snow, and ice. We will study the different types of snow crystals and how they form, and the insulating properties of snow. Participants will learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia, and about the clothing and equipment needed for safe travel in the winter environment. As well, they will study about plant and animal adaptations that help them to survive through harsh winter conditions, how to build snow igloos, learn tracking skills and look for signs of wildlife in winter, and prepare and eat hearty and nutritious meals cooked outdoors.
Wilderness Living & Natural Skills (Year-Round)
January 23rd @ Hard'ack Recreation Area
12:00- 2:00 pm
Participants will learn sustainable, traditional, and modern outdoor living skills by harvesting, preparing, and preserving wild edible foods and medicinal plants, practicing friction-fire, constructing earth-shelters, making utensils, cordage and tools from materials found in nature, baking and cooking outdoors, engaging in land navigation using solar cycles and map / terrain reading skills, and general survival skills and low-impact practices using largely what the surrounding environment will provide.
Background
Paul Brown has over 30 years of active and diverse experience as an educator, which includes environmental education, adventure based / experiential learning programs, wilderness medical instruction, natural history programs, professional climbing guide & instructor, and high school science teacher. He holds an M.S in Environmental Studies from Antioch University, and is a Level II licensed secondary educator in Vermont. In addition, he has a professional certification as a rock climbing instructor from the American Mountain Guides Association, and has first aid / medical training, which includes Emergency Medical Technician and Wilderness First Responder certifications. More than anything, Paul enjoys being outdoors at all times of year, engaged in a wide variety of adventure pursuits and experiencing nature in one way or another… and being able to actively share this with others!
