Guitar Fundamentals (13 and up beginner lessons)

This beginner’s guitar class is designed to help you get to know your guitar and get playing! We’ll go over some basic techniques for care and maintenance of your instrument as well as how to tune your guitar and change the strings. We will also learn simple chords and strumming patterns as well as some introductory music theory to help develop a musical vocabulary. Beyond that the exact path of the course material will be determined by the interest and skills of the group but potential topics could include: scales and melodic patterns, singing and playing simultaneously, group/ensemble playing or song writing techniques. There is plenty to learn we just have to get playing first!

Students will need to bring their own acoustic guitar.

Guitar 2

So you’ve got some chords under your fingers and have learned a few songs online, now what?
This class is for advanced beginners comfortable with a variety of chords and maybe a few songs who are looking to take their playing to the next level. We will practice new chords and moveable chord shapes, introduce scales and perhaps improvisation as well as some theory to help “decode” the fret board.
As always the precise path of the class will be determined by the interest and ability of the group.

Students must bring their own guitar and tuner.

Guitar Ensemble

Playing music with other people can be one of the most enriching and rewarding experiences for a musician but it can also be daunting, especially if you are new to it.
In this class our focus will be almost exclusively on playing together with groups or individuals playing unique parts within a song. Students will develop their ears and work on playing their part while also hearing the other parts of the song.
While all levels of players are welcome, students should know at least a few chords and be comfortable with their instrument.

Students must bring their own guitar and tuner.

Instructor Bio:
Hi! I am a native of Franklin County and a St. Albans resident since 2010. I have been playing guitar and singing in bands for just over 20 years. I currently play as a solo artist and as the singer/guitarist in the rock group Near North. I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a focus in songwriting, arranging and production. As a guitar teacher I promote practical musicianship which to me means getting students to love playing and cultivate a sense of musicality that allows them to effectively communicate musical ideas regardless of their technical ability.
