Deb has been a therapy dog handler since 1996 and the volunteer Director of Training and Certification for Therapy Dogs of Vermont (TDV) since 2005. Deb also volunteers with German Shepherd Resource and Rescue Center, Inc., as an adviser on dog training and behavior to the organization’s Board of Directors and author of articles for their newsletter and educational programs. She’s happy to answer any questions about classes—so drop her an e-mail if you have any!

We've had inquiries about bringing children to the classes.  Due most importantly to liability and safety issues and secondly to space constraints, we CANNOT have children present at class. These training sessions are for adult participants and their dog only.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact Deb directly at 802-849-2363 or the Recreation Office at 524-1500 x *268.

--Only ONE additional family member may attend with the person who is enrolled; one adult (18 or older) will be the primary handler/be allowed to hold the leash in class.
--That additional family member must be 14 or older (if under 18, can only observe).

DOG/PUPPY ESSENTIALS: BASIC TRAINING AND SOCIAL SKILLS

This is our "ALL YOU'LL EVER NEED DOG CLASS" , This 6-week basic class covers all you need to:
1. UNDERSTAND YOUR DOG: through learning how your dog communicates and why he does what he does--includes our powerful program for building a confident, socially-savvy dog

2. HAVE A WELL-BEHAVED DOG: yes, we cover the basic obedience stuff--walking nicely on leash, coming when called, and more--using a simple training approach you can use well after the class ends

3. BOND WITH YOUR DOG: through gentle touch techniques, fun games, and understanding your dog's unique personality.
*Note: Dogs are not to be brought to the first session. Needed equipment will be discussed at the 1st class. To review all class policies/restrictions (regarding vaccinations, aggressive dogs in class, youth participants, etc.) in advance of sign-up, please go HERE!

BEYOND BASICS - Pre-requisite: Deb's BASIC dog class (or approval from the instructor)

(Dog Training) 5-week class. Time to take off the training wheels! This class is the next step after our Basic Training and Social Skills. This class takes your training to the next level. What’s the next level? Well, that’s the beauty of this class- You decide! Like many exercise classes that show you various intensity levels of a given exercise, this class shows you the basic, intermediate, and advanced version of each exercise. This permits perfect fit training for you and your dog! If your dog’s heeling is fantastic, we’ll help you take it to the next level. If your sits are still a challenge, we’ll go back a level and reinforce the basics. The atmosphere is supportive yet challenging. The emphasis is on what you want to achieve with your dog within the exercises we teach, and then giving you the instruction and proper exercises to achieve your goals.

NEW OFFERING - Therapy Dog Academy!

So, your dog wants to be a therapy dog?  Well, we’ve got a course for that!  The course gives dogs and handlers the necessary skills for not only passing the test, but also for working successfully as a therapy dogs team.  The course is taught by Deb, who has been a therapy dog handler since the mid-1990s, has had 6 therapy dog partners over the years, and has directed a large therapy dog certification and training program since 2005.

Gold Star Dog Training’s 6-week course will:

1. Teach you and your dog the skill sfor passing a therapy dog test (such as leave it, loose-leash walking, attention work, polite greetings and more);
2. Give you the tools and know-how to work safely and effectively on duty as a therapy dog team;

3. Teach you how to be an excellent dog handler; and
4. Help you develop a close working relationship with your dog.

This course is suitable for people and dogs:

- Working toward therapy dog certification;
- Already working as a therapy dog team but wanting to develop new skills or hone existing ones; and
- Looking for skills that are useful for anyone wanting to work his/her dog in public (e.g., in the workplace, for service dog training).

Requirements/Policies for Therapy Dog course

1.
Dogs must have completed the Gold Star Dog Training Basic/Essentials course (completion of Beyond Basics highly recommended);exceptions may be made by contacting the instructor before registering for the course.
2. Dogs are expected to have a solid foundation in obedience and skills taught in the Basic/Essentials and the Beyond Basics courses.
3. Dogs must be social with people, tolerant of dogs, and not show any signs of aggression or reactivity. Dogs with reactivity, aggression/history of aggression, anxiety, or fearfulness are not good candidates for this course (the instructor reserves the right to remove a dog from the course, without refund).
4. This course does not result in therapy dog certification, nor does it guarantee certification.
5. This course is designed to give general guidance on the skills best suited for therapy dog work and common elements on most tests. Therapy dog organizations may have different requirements or may emphasize different skills, and some may have additional requirements that limit a dog’s ability to become certified (e.g., unacceptable training equipment, breed-specific restrictions, raw meat diet restrictions).  It is up to the dog owner to research and understand these for the therapy dog organization s/he chooses.
6. Dogs do not attend the first class.
7. Every dog owner must provide vaccination documentation (described in our policies).
8. See general policy document for additional requirements, such as equipment restrictions, guests in class, etc. (https://www.goldstardog.com/findclass/).

*Note: Dogs are not to be brought to the first session. Needed equipment will be discussed at the 1st class. To review all class policies/restrictions (regarding vaccinations, aggressive dogs in class, youth participants, etc.) in advance of sign-up, please go HERE!
